A Look at Novel Engineering in a Classroom

I started my journey with Novel Engineering through the course offered by Tufts. I was a relative newcomer to teaching engineering and eager to learn how to do so effectively. Novel Engineering represented a large shift from my original approach. I had to let go of a lot of my structure and idea about what I should get as an end result. Instead, we focused on the process and thinking critically about decisions throughout.

E-Team at the CEEO

ETEAM craneHere at the Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO), we are constantly testing new equipment and activities to teach engineering to kids. To help us, we need kids who are willing to try out the new tools and projects to see how well they work.  The E-TEAM consists of twenty students from third through fifth grades. These participants come to the CEEO once a month to help test new educational tools and curriculum for Tufts researchers. The students get a chance to participate in cutting-edge educational research and play with some cool new toys, and the researchers get concrete feedback from a group of enthusiastic and candid kids.

Digital Big Band 2018

From September 17th through the 21st I traveled to Bangkok, Thailand to attend and present at the Digital Big Bang 2018 conference.  My visit was hosted by LEGO Education and their partners, Gammaco. The conference was part tech trade show and part education expo.  It was all future facing. There were events, booths, and presentations related to Big Data, IOT, Artificial Intelligence, as well as transportation, homes and cities of the future.  There were robotics and coding events for kids and teachers. There were drone races and start-up business competitions.
